Robotising reel handling

Every year at Vaassen thousands of innerliner reels are slit from huge parent reels into customer dedicated reels. The finished reel widths vary from 50 mm up to 166 mm with a wide reel weighing around 18,0 kg. Year after year these reels have been handled manually. The heavy reels were placed by the operators on the pallets prepared for shipping. All work done by hand, which was quite an effort and could even lead to physical issues for the slitting teams.

Vaassen recognized the risk involved in such manual work and explored ways to reduce the physical strain for the operators, as well as to increase the efficiency and output. The result of the study was an investment to automate the process by installing robots to load the pallets fully in line with the packing instructions. Every slitting machine has its own robot.

By installing this new equipment Vaassen has gained flexibility and increased output. Our slitters have new partners doing the heavy lifting work for them. It also enables us to gather Quality Assurance data more easily with the goal to service you better and provide you with the quality you are looking for.
